Bob's Blog Archive July 30, 2009 A mid summer blog update – “Aren’t you on Facebook or Twitter?” That’s a question I get asked a lot. And my reply has always been something like: “No, I have enough friends”, or, “No, I know who my friends are”. To me, the whole “social networking” thing seems a bit insincere. I mean come on, who really has 100, 200, or more friends? They call it “Social Networking”… “But you own a hat company; it would be so good for your brand.” That’s the reply I get from “Twitters”, or “Facebookers”, or whatever you call them, in response to my negative answer. Well I’m all in favor of doing what’s good for our brand, so, Monday, with some urging from my sister Stephanie, we signed up Broner Hat and Glove Company with a Facebook page. And then I went in… You know what, it’s pretty interesting. I found out that a lot of people I know are actively “social networking”. Once I “went in”, it took me a long time to come out. I had to check on my neighbors, then my high school class, then my employees, then some ladies I think are hot, and on and on. None of this had to do with our brand, or hats or even anything even remotely related to business. But I was smiling - and learning. We get calls every day from people wanting to buy our hats. Since we only sell our brand to retailers, it creates an interesting dilemma. We often suggest a retailer in their town, or an on-line retailer; and hope that retailer has the hats that the consumer wants. But there is no guarantee. Can Facebook help? Maybe, it sure can’t hurt. We want fans. People wearing Broner are our fans. Now we have a way of hearing from them. They can let folks know where they found our products and in turn be fans of our retail customers. And we can become friends with our fans. Sounds funny, but that’s what I call “Social Networking” with a purpose. So excuse us for starting out slow. We are working our site to get some cool stuff posted. I think we even found a place for Bob’s Blog, one that can accept comments from our fans. Welcome to the new frontier…
