BOB'S BLOG

July 8, 2010

A summer blog

What a great time of year this is in the great state of Michigan.  Lots of summer fun going on here.  Summers in Michigan are filled with boats, golfers, barbeques, picnics, walks, ball games, fire works, parades, outdoor concerts, runs, camps and family vacations.   Because we get this weather for only about 90 days a year, Michiganders really embrace the opportunity.  Our slogan, “The Great Lakes State” takes on a whole new meaning.  A benefit of being a “Midwest” state in the Eastern Time zone is that the sun stays out until almost 10 at night.  Ah, the sun - that’s where this blog transitions to a hat blog.  (You know that my blogs have to be connected to the hat business somehow; you’re reading this on the Broner Hat web site for starters.)

Hat Day In The Sun
We just participated in The Headwear Associations annual event promoting hats and their benefits of protecting us from the suns’ harm.  We went downtown across from Comerica Park and passed out over 600 hats and literature before a Tigers baseball game.  It’s amazing, put up a sign that says “free” and people come out of the woodwork.   You would have thought that we were giving away money.  In any event, the goal was to educate folks about how a wide brim hat can protect us from the suns harm.  In doing so, we hope to convert a few new hat wearers into the market place.  I think we got a few.  See the photo below.

Heat Wave
Much of the country has been seeing triple digit temperatures for the past few weeks.   This has contributed to great hat sales this season.  Most of our customers are reporting happy totals in their hat departments.  That’s what we love to hear.  If you are one of the many not wearing hats in this heat, give it a try.  It’s like giving yourself shade, and it feels good.  Take the challenge.  Wear a hat outside all weekend.  I’ll bet you won’t be as comfortable without it next weekend.  Plus, if you find the right hat or cap it will become an important part of your wardrobe.  And, if you are a guy reading this, I’m told by a pretty reliable source that chicks dig hats.  So that works for me…

Spring 2011
The models are hired and the locations are booked.  It’s hard to believe but we are shooting our spring 2011 line this week.  It’s fun to open the sample boxes and see all the new hats.  UPF 50 fabrics in new colors and shapes will be featured prominently in the new line.  Lots of other goodies too.  Keep a close look, our catalog will be printed in August for all to see.

Summer Vacation
So, that’s a quick update.  I’ve got my own summer vacation coming up.  I’m going to Alaska for the first time this month - actually going on a boat from Anchorage to Vancouver.  I’m fired up.  And when I get back, the work begins again.  August is the beginning of our selling season.  I’ve got my first two meetings set for August 4th and August 5th.  And it won’t stop until Halloween.  So I’m going to enjoy July as long as it lasts.  We’ve got The Counting Crows in town tonight.  I think I’ll wear a hat.  Have a great summer!
